Pure "Golden" Yellow Birchen Gamefowl

Herrisford O'Conner Yellow Birchens

This wonderful pair of "Gold" Yellow Birchens are part of the foundation of my "Gold" Yellow Birchen line breeding program. The cock is a son of the old cock pictured with Ron Lutz on my home page. The old cock, "Ned" was bred by Jack Boydson of Alabama and is a 2003 cock. He is 3/4 Ferris and 1/4 Davis Birchen. Jack Boydson bought a pair of Birchens, his parents, from Jerry Lawrence. The cock was a pure Faris Cock. The Hen was 1/2 Faris and 1/2 Davis. Jack told me that the hen was one of the original birds that Jerry bought from Jerry Dove of San Antonio, Tx. Jerry Dove got the last pair of Farris Birchens from Mr Farris in Winchester, Tn. You will find more history of the Yellow Birchen Here

This is a more typical color that Yellow Birchens come.

The Yellow Birchen has been a very fundamental breed in developing many strains of gamebirds but are now quite rare. They were known for their gameness and their cutting ability. Below is a parital list of gamefowl families that all have Birchen blood in them. However their are probably very few families of gamefowl that do not have some Yellow Birchen blood.

Herman Duryea, John Weightman Tassells, The Claibornes, Groves, Gilkerson, Morgans and other Whitehackle families, Clarets, Pumpkin Hulseys, Allen Roundheads, Shawlneck, Albany Bighams. and the Eslin Red Quills.

The Yellow Birchen was probably a cross in Ireland between a Gillman grey and a Herrisford Brown Red. They will come in diferent colors including, Birchen breasted, Canary or "Greek Fire", and rarely may be Duckwing or black breasted. Yellow Birchens will generally have a brown breast that looks like the bark on a Birch Tree. Many times their breast is the color of a Robins breast. The pure Faris birchens will ususally be pearl legged and they are always a straight comb bird if they are pure Yellow Birchens.

If you know of more information about Birchens or other breeders of them I would like to correspond.

I am also looking for articles from the old gamefowl magazines on Birchens and Duryeas if anyone would be so kind to send me a copy. email. I am trying to keep a list of breeders.

Thanks,
Bart
